How the tolls are worked out

The trip is routed for a truck over the real road network and then split by country: how many kilometres of motorway, trunk and primary road it uses in each one. Those kilometres are priced with that country’s heavy-goods tariff, adjusted for the number of axles and for the EURO class wherever the country differentiates.

The four kinds of charge in Europe

Per-kilometre charging through an on-board unit or registration: Germany, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Belgium, Bulgaria.
Barrier tolls on motorways: Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Greece, Serbia.
Time-based vignettes (day, week, year): Romania, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia. We show them separately because they do not depend on the kilometres driven.
Separately priced structures: tunnels, bridges and passes (Brenner, Mont Blanc, the Bosphorus) that are often paid on the spot.

Why the EURO class matters

Most European systems charge older engines more through the air-pollution component. In the published German 2026 tariff that component is 0.1 ct/km for EURO VI and 13.4 ct/km for EURO III on a total of roughly 31–35 ct/km — so for the same trip the difference can exceed 20 %.

How accurate the result is

It is a guide for quoting, not an invoice. We use average per-country rates by road class for a rig over 12 tonnes; we do not model each country’s weight bands or the individual motorway operator (in Italy and France rates differ by section). Vignettes are flagged but not added to the total.
